Guest Post: Homemade Piggy Banks that Will Encourage Kids to Save

Thanks to Kiley for this article!

Whenever your kids receive money, they naturally are more than eager to spend it all on something they’ve been wanting. While it is totally fine to let them spend their money, it is also important to teach them the value of saving. One of the most basic ways to teach young kids to save is by giving them a piggy bank. This way, they can watch their bank fill up and they will learn that the more they save, the more they can buy. Let them make their own homemade piggy bank and they will be more than eager to start saving!

Bottle Banks

One of the easiest ways to make a homemade piggy bank is to start off with some sort of empty bottle that you have lying around your home. Soda bottles and bleach bottles work best. Make sure that you clean them out thoroughly before you begin to craft them. All you need are a few craft materials to turn your trash into a place for your kids to keep their treasure.

Shoebox Bank

Another simple way to make a bank is to use an old shoebox. You can probably find at least one around the house, and if not, you can use a similarly sized cardboard box. Use the same kinds of supplies as the bottle bank project to make a frugal, creative piggy bank.

Paper Mache Piggy

Paper Mache piggy banks are a bit messy to make, but they will be worth it in the end! This project will take longer to make, which makes it a perfect rainy day craft. You’ll have to go out and buy some supplies, but it will still be a very frugal project. Paper Mache banks are a bit more fragile, so make sure your child knows how to take care of it.

An Alternate to Pigs

Who says banks need to be shaped like pigs? This website has instructions for how to make banks shaped like frogs and mailboxes. Follow these instructions or use them to inspire you to make your own unique bank designs.

Giant Piggy Bank

This giant piggy bank is perfect if you plan to save up a lot of change. This piggy bank is perfect for adults as well as kids. It’s easy to dump your pocket change into this massive piggy bank and watch your savings add up. It is a great way to save up for a vacation or a big ticket item. You’d be surprised how much money a piggy bank this size can hold.
